These methods may be different from one parent to another yet similar in some ways. Some parents may be disciplinarians others might not. Whichever way you choose, its effects will always be visible. This article focuses on parenting styles and their effects on children.

There is always a great variation in how parents raise their children. However, there are similarities that are often noticed from one parent to another. This has enabled researchers to come up with four parenting styles. These are strategies that you as a parent use to raise your child. These styles have different effects on kids. They are;

Authoritarian parenting

These sets of parents are also referred to as disciplinarians. Punishment is a common norm as they are strict and offer little negotiation. There is little communication and on most occasions, it’s from the parent to child.

Authoritarian parents make rules and enforce consequences with no regard for a child’s opinion. Children brought up in such homes tend to follow rules most times. They are at higher risk of having self-esteem issues as their opinions are not valued.

Permissive parenting

Parents in this category are more of friends to their children. Children are allowed to do what pleases them. Parents offer limited guidance and only step up when situations call. Permissive parents communicate openly with their children but they do not discourage ill behavior with much effort.

Children who grow up with permissive parents tend to portray more behavioral problems. They have little or no respect for rules and authority. They often suffer from self-esteem problems.

Uninvolved parenting

Uninvolved parents tend to give children a lot of freedom. In most circumstances, they do not know where they are or what they are doing. This often occurs when the parent is less interested in parenting, unsure of what to do, or is overwhelmed with other problems.

Communication is limited as both the parent and the child seem to be too apart.

Parents in this scenario expect children to raise themselves. They have a few rules that have no impact. Children in such situations often suffer self-esteem related issues and are often unhappy.

Authoritative parenting

Authoritative parents seem to be fully aware of what they are doing. They are reasonable and caring. They set clear expectations for their children. They give reasons behind every disciplinary action they take. They strive to maintain a positive relationship with their children and build their self-esteem.

Communication is frequent and clear in this parenting style. Children brought up with authoritative parents are responsible and comfortable when expressing their opinions.

It is common that at times you are authoritative and sometimes permissive. It is actually very few parents that fit in one particular style. Authoritative parenting is clearly the best. What matters the most is the quality of parenting rather than the long hours you spend with your child.

Parents use several methods to raise their children.
