What are the different types of parenting styles?

Parenting Styles

Authoritative/ Commanding

This type of parenting style, the legal guardian is considered to be demanding. Most times their rules which have been set and a child must abide by them, failure to that, the result is usually punished.

This form of parenting, there’s room for negotiation, between parent and child.

Indulgent/ Permissive/ Easy-Going

This type of style the parent tends to be lenient since the parent is having certain expectations on how their child should behave.  The parent can easily have a reasoning ground with their youngster.

A parent to an adolescent should try to embrace this method of parenting, as an ultimatum to other parenting styles, to avoid their teenager from rebellious.

 Distant/ Uninvolved

Most parents who have this parenting style are mostly bothered by providing their children with basic needs and not forming their character. This form of parenting, the progenitor is “disinterested” with the child’s personal life.

Authoritarian

This type of parenting style is somewhat similar to authoritative.

So, what is the difference?

An authoritative parent tends to adjust his/her expectation to the needs of their child. This parent tends to reason with the child so that at the end of the day they socialize their child and end up sharing.

A parent who is an authoritarian believes that there is no room to negotiate and that the child should always obey. They exercise control over their youngsters.

Authoritative parents/progenitors are said to be stricter and firm as compared to the authoritarian. The few rules and regulations that authoritative parents set mostly end up being enforced.

Children who have been brought up using either of the parenting styles tend to be well behaved. The difference comes in; Young one’s from the authoritarian parenting style has low self-esteem, whereas those from the authoritative parenting style don’t have this type of problem.

Effects of different parenting styles

As earlier stated; both authoritarian and authoritative parents bring up highly disciplined children but the difference lies where authoritarian parents bring up children who have self-esteem issues.

Easy going/permissive parenting brings up children who have trouble with respecting authority since the parent is normally too lenient. Most of these youngsters tend to have issues at school.

Distant parenting is ranked lowest since children with this type of parenting have lower self-esteem as compared to the child brought up by an authoritarian parent.

NOTE: It is recommended if parents don’t exercise one parenting style, but all parenting styles (apart from Uninvolved parenting) depending on a child’s age and the situation. A certain situation forces a parent to embrace a different parenting style.
