Advice from Terryanne Chebet after losing her job

The formerly renowned Citizen TV Business news anchor Terryanne Chebet steps up to encourage the tussling journalists affected by the massive layoffs influenced by the global pandemic Covid-19 virus.

Following her resignation as the General Manager for Metropol TV, Chebet shares the experience of how devastated she was after being discharged from Citizen TV in 2016. She was clouded with self-pity and anxiety making her feel betrayed and angry towards her boss who announced this to her while she was preparing for her evening TV show, The Business Centre.

After shedding tears over her lost job for a while, the single mother of two daughters had to move on and focus on how she was going to survive with the two businesses she had started while working for Citizen TV.

Chebet advised her colleagues to work on the following as they journey towards getting back on their feet.

1.Budgeting

Chebet highlighted that a budget was important because it will aid them in taking control of their finances and understand their financial situation better.

2. Restructuring Debt issue

She told those who have loans to engage in relevant financial institutions to seek reprieve to stabilize their financial condition. Chebet also advised them to be in touch with everyone they owe and inform them concerning their financial situation. She said communication changes everything.

Terryanne encouraged them to have health insurance coverage for themselves and the family to prevent more issues in case of health emergencies.

3. Update and Cleanup CV

Chebet advised those who were laid off to remain visible by creating captivating content about the industries they work in and share it with peers.

4. Rewrite the Strategic plan

She encouraged the journalists to analyze themselves and set goals of where they would like to see themselves 5-10 years to come. Chebet said self-analysis will help them know their weaknesses and strengths, hence they could begin working on how they could be better as they strive forward.

5. The building of personal brands

Terryanne advised those who were laid off to ensure that they present themselves in a way in which they would like to be perceived. Having an identity that is peculiar from others in the media industry. In addition to that, she encouraged them to take professional photos and use social media to elevate their brands.

6. Physical exercise

Chebet said that physical exercise for at least thirty minutes a day benefits both the body and the mind. Furthermore, exercises help keep chronic diseases away and improve one’s general mental health.

7. Share your story

Chebet was afraid of how she was to introduce herself as a news anchor after she was no longer working for Citizen TV. She noticed the importance of coming to terms with the fact that she lost her job and confidently sharing her story comfortably.

“Your future employees will almost always ask as well, so ensure you have thought through your job loss and can tell it well and comfortably, she said”
